Be Nice to Good Sites - Vote for Them

The most difficult thing on the Internet is getting noticed. I have designed a few sites, and went through all the hassle of getting them to the people.

First thing, get registered with major search engines. I say major because only the major search engines will be sending visitors to your site. Sadly, even these will not be doing enough for you.

Some time ago, I have used an of-the-internet very involved counter. There are some problems associated with using it; this is why it is not on my site any longer. But, I used it, and I was able to see the truth with my own eyes. The most hits always come from other web sites, not search engines! And what web sites these are.

Most of the places sending visitors to my site (200 unique visitors a day) are the Top NN sites. The ones that list "best" sites in a certain category. How they find out the "best" ones is not a secret to us web masters. The more hits you send to them, the higher your rating is. You do not have to own a good site at all. Just send the hits.

I have never been at the top of the list. Most of the good sites I know of share the middle of the "Tops" list with me, sending 1-3 hits a day. How do we do it? Well, in the morning I login to my computer, open my own web site and click on the links on my "Links" page. Most of the others do the same. No one else ever does that for us. Of course I could get close to the top by having a pop-up window with this "Top" site. But I like my visitors enough not to get them annoyed and frustrated by all the unethical junk many of the sites have.

Have you ever seen a Top site? Its first 10 sites would usually be sending something like a couple of hundreds hits every day. These are the ones that most likely run some programs that artificially generate the nonexistent hits. Further sites are far below this magical number, may be 10-20 hits every day. These are the more or less honest but unethical ones. They usually have pop-up things. Then the good ones come. One or two hits a day.

Now, why I am writing all this? I am asking for help and recognition. If you ever visit a good site that either honestly asks you to "Vote" for it or less honestly, but still nicely, gives you the list of "Great" other sites - please visit these sites, or at least one of them. Why not? You have enjoyed someone's hard work, and you know (at least after this explanation) that the author really wants others to visit the site. Why not be nice enough and help the web master? Trust me, just one more hit will move a site at least 10 spaces up in the list. Not only that, if every visitor becomes as nice as you are, the Top sites will finally be listing really Top ones at the top, not junk and unethical ones.
